Many relate Rolland and Heidi Baker to their work in Africa. Before Africa, Rolland's roots were in China. Both Rolland and Heidi served alongside Jackie Pullinger in Hong Kong, following their service in Indonesia and the Philippines. After Hong Kong, came their work in the streets of London and then Mozambique.

Rolland Baker and both of his parents were born in China. Soon after the revolution in 1949, the Bakers moved to Taiwan with many other missionaries forced out of China.
